Thanks Harry
Big thanks to Harry Cory Wright who made his way down to Oxford from North Norfolk on Monday to talk to us about Landscape photography. Excellent, thought provoking evening.

Welcome to the ‘new’ central region!
As from 1st July 2009 Central Region, which stretches from Oxfordshire to the Norfolk coast will split into two regions. Central region will be made up of the counties of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
The committee and I are really pleased by this - it has been something we have been campaigning for since the start of the year. The size of the region was obviously not tenable in terms of members traveling to meetings and indeed us organising events that were miles away.
So if you are a BIPP member in Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire then keep an eye on the site for events coming up. Better still RSS the site to get regular updates.
John
Harry Cory Wright, much celebrated and individual British Landscape Photographer will be visiting us on 29th June, 7.30pm at The Corner Club in central Oxford.
Harry’s work is done using a 10×8 Gandolphi Camera. His prints are things of great beauty. Their scale and clarity beguiles the viewer and forces questions about the nature of landscape photography. Although he is based in Norfolk and takes a lot of inspiration from there, he has photographed all over the British Isles and will be talking to us about his book ‘Journey through the British Isles’ as well as his philosophy towards landscape photography, taking photographs for the National Trust amongst other things.
It’s sure to be a fascinating presentation.
It’s £5 to BIPP members and will be open to none BIPP members so be sure to book your place by replying to this post ASAP. Payment on the night please.
Please see the link to his site over in blogroll.
After much deliberation we are delighted to announce the all new
BIPP Central Awards 2009
I am now delighted to supply the (new) details for the 2009 Awards as well as some explanation for the changes.
Last year the awards were cancelled due to lack of interest! Can you believe that? All those potential opportunities to market as ‘Award winning’ photographer were just thrown to the wind!
In an attempt to make the competition more attractive it was decided that entries would be made to the Flicker site.
This was to make entering easier and to allow members to view and comment on
entries prior to the closing date.
It was at this point that I became involved and the committee were presented with a number of concerns about the proposed format for the competition. Whilst it was accepted that a priority was to generating interest, it must also be understood that the competition had to be fair and professional in it’s implementation. Serious concerns were expressed about the appropriateness of Flicker as a professional hosting medium. More
concerns were considered about the option to view and comment before the closing
date. This had been proposed in an attempt to generate interest but later considered a compromise to the overall objectivity of this professional competition.
It was finally decided that if the awards were to be run, they must be administered professionally above all else.
If after all attempts to generate interest, you cannot be persuaded to seek a business boosting award, that is your choice AND your loss but promotion of these awards will not be at the sacrifice of professional objectivity.
Full rules and entry details are now listed on the page - Central Region Awards 2009
Fundamental changes to the previous details are that images will now be hosted on Instant Memories. Many of you will know Instant Memories as a professional hosting company ( www.instantmemories.co.uk ) and we are grateful to them for supporting us in this way.
Entries will be uploaded to Instant Memories and NOT available to members to view OR comment on. After the closing date (which has been rescheduled because of these delays - but now as listed), entries will be judged by Fellows of the BIPP. Details of judges will be posted.
No category will go live until a minimum of five entries (five different members) have been submitted. Following last years ‘disappointing’ response, this rule has been introduced to prevent ‘awards by default’ and preserve the credibility of the award.
After the judging process, the access codes to view images will be announced and members will be free to view entries. There will be no facility to invite comments from members.
Our hope is to run a credible competition and every effort has been made towards this objective.
Please support us with entries and comments for future improvement.
Rain did not stop play for Kelly Hearne’s excellent seminar and workshop at The Corner Club yesterday. Loads of great tips and useful ideas from Kelly. If you missed it…well, what can I say? I suppose you can always pay for Simon John’s wedding seminar…but, just think, you could have come to this one for £20….! There’s always next time I suppose….
Actually - no - please do stay away. There’s more room for me to learn.
Only jesting with you ![]()
The Central Awards are changing. Please watch this space for an announcement from David Stares, the Awards Secretary.
We are delighted to welcome Nigel Ferguson to the committee in the role of Treasurer.
Check out his website under photographers. Thanks Nigel!
Kelly Hearne will be with us next Monday (27th April). Don’t miss out on a workshop and seminar from this really talented contemporary wedding photographer.
The venue will be The Corner Club, Turl St Oxford, on Monday 27th April.
At 3.00pm, after meeting in the Corner Club for tea/coffee, Kelly will be doing a wedding workshop on location around some beautiful Oxford buildings. This will finish at approx 5pm.
At 7pm in the Turl Room at the Corner Club, Kelly will be holding a talk and showing some of her work.
£20 - You can pay on the night. Cheques payable to BIPP. Thanks
We are delighted to welcome David Stares onto the committee. Please check out his link under ‘Photographers’.
We have had some interesting comments about the suitability of Flickr for hosting the competition.
Some of the comments:
“Is Flickr a professional way of hosting the BIPP Central Awards?”
“Does the ability to comment on the images sway an impartial judging process?”
“Could entrants be put off entering if they feel that their images are not at the same standard as other entries?”
These are certainly interesting and important points and ones that need due consideration. As I have mentioned before, we chose flickr as a potential method of simplifying the process - but could that be flawed?
PLEASE could you comment and let us know your feelings about this issue. In the meantime the committee feels that it should perhaps revisit the delivery of the awards. Your comments would be most helpful.
